The Vortex

Murano / Italian Studio Glass Tradition
DESCRIPTION
To make a piece like this, the glassblower begins with a flat pad of murrini - thin slices of bundled coloured glass rods, each showing a cross-section of colour - laid out in a spiral pattern on the marver table. The hot gather is then rolled across them and blown, fusing all the colours into a single wall of glass, pressed and shaped into an asymmetric pooling triangular form.
DIMENSIONS
8"L x 7"W x 2"H (approx)
MEDIUM
Hand-blown multicolour murrini glass, triangular press-formed bowl
EDITION
Unique / One-of-a-kind (Condition: Excellent)
PERIOD
Italy - Contemporary
PROVENANCE
The murrini spiral technique is one of Murano's oldest and most demanding, requiring a team of two or three glassblowers working in precise coordination. No single element of the pattern can be corrected once the gather is taken up.
