The Violet Cut

Murano Glassworks
DESCRIPTION
Sommerso - Italian for submerged - is Murano's most jewel-like technique: one or more layers of coloured glass are encased within a thick clear outer wall. This piece adds a second layer of craft: after blowing, the outer surface was hand-cut and cold-worked to create the geometric facets that now catch and amplify the deep magenta interior.
DIMENSIONS
4"W x 10"H
MEDIUM
Vintage hand-blown and hand-faceted sommerso glass, deep magenta cased in clear
EDITION
Unique / One-of-a-kind (Condition: Very good vintage condition)
PERIOD
Venice, Italy - Mid-20th century; Vintage
PROVENANCE
Faceted sommerso is among the most labour-intensive Murano forms, requiring close collaboration between a furnace team and a cold-working lapidary - it is among the most technically demanding objects the island has ever produced.
