The Dreaming Arch

Seri / Sonoran Desert tradition
DESCRIPTION
Desert ironwood - Olneya tesota - grows only in the Sonoran Desert and is among the densest hardwoods in North America: it sinks in water and was used by the Seri people of coastal Sonora for tools and carvings long before it became a recognised art form. This abstract arch - a figure curled in sleep across its own shoulders - renders a deeply human image in an almost mineral material.
DIMENSIONS
5"W x 3"D (approx) x 12"H
MEDIUM
Carved and polished Sonoran Desert ironwood (Olneya tesota), single-piece
EDITION
Unique / One-of-a-kind (Condition: Very good)

Mexico - Late 20th century; Vintage
PROVENANCE
Ironwood carvings from the Sonoran tradition are collected internationally for their density, figural authority, and the warmth of their surface. The Seri people are credited with originating the art form.
