Sangue d'Oro

Murano Glassworks
DESCRIPTION
The deep ruby colour of this pitcher - achieved only through the addition of gold chloride to the molten glass, a technique known as sangue di piccione (pigeon's blood) - has been the most prized of all Murano colours since the 17th century. The outer surface carries a plating of 24-karat gold applied through a heat-fusion process, onto which a Murano painter has then executed the floral panel and scrollwork in raised polychrome enamel.
DIMENSIONS
6"W (approx) x 10"H
MEDIUM
Vintage hand-blown ruby glass with 24K gold plating and hand-painted polychrome
EDITION
Unique / One-of-a-kind (Condition: Very good vintage condition)
PERIOD
Venice, Italy - Mid-20th century; Vintage
PROVENANCE
Ruby glass made with gold chloride - not copper - was the most expensive Murano production category. Vintage pieces combining a gold body and hand-painted enamel are among the most technically accomplished objects in the Murano tradition.
