Copper Mirror
Italian Lustre Ceramic tradition
- DESCRIPTION
- Lustre glazing - the application of metallic oxides to a fired ceramic surface, then re-firing in a reduction kiln to produce a shimmering metallic effect - was brought to Italy from Islamic Spain in the 15th century and immediately transformed the ceramics of Deruta and Gubbio. This piece works directly in that tradition: the copper lustre ground shifts between rose gold, petrol blue, and dark bronze depending on the light.
- DIMENSIONS
- 5"W (approx) x 14"H
- MEDIUM
- Lustre-glazed earthenware, copper-iridescent reduction-fired ground
- EDITION
- Unique / One-of-a-kind (Condition: Very good)
- PERIOD
- Italy - Umbria/Deruta tradition; Contemporary, ancient technique
- PROVENANCE
- The reduction-lustre technique requires an additional firing in a specifically oxygen-deprived kiln atmosphere - a process that remains highly unpredictable and requires exceptional skill to control. Deruta has produced lustre ware continuously since the 15th century.
